I looked around and realized that my whole life had become everything Id worked so hard to be, and when I came back to have a regular life, I had to go find one. So I just waited, knowing it was going to happen sometime. AD: When he's soloing, I tend to try and watch him because it's not only hearing it's also eye contact. I look at people like Jeff Beck who are in their 60s and still kicking ass, with more fire than they had when they were kids. We hadnt finished the second leg of the tour. You became one of the biggest bands in the world. And he said No, hes gotta do what hes gotta do. Look, youve got to remember, they didnt want to make it with a lead singer. And theyre all good. Its extremely gratifying to have people come up and say Open Arms was my prom song, and to this day, my husband and I still listen to it. Or when guysll come up and say, Yknow, I wasnt into youse guys, but if I took a chick to your concert you know what Im sayin? I get the whole spectrum. So I was ready to go, go, go, and I think pretty much everybody else in the band was. RM: You seem to have definite ideas about these things. They were really an amazing performing band. I got a phone call from Jon, and I could tell Neal was on the phone, cause I can tell when the line levels down, and I could hear him breathing, I think. And so we were basically known as a touring band. Sometimes I like to come out of a song, explode into life, and then create a dynamic situation. RM: Do you have a set of pads in your dressing room? NoI didnt think Journey was done. He's on the "A Hard Road" album, along with Peter Green. So Im really excited about getting out there and just being completely in control of whats going on, for real. I've been with them for about four years now. **But do you think your drinking affected your relationships with the other guys in the band? But it was just great. I find that now, though, even when I push myself, I don't have to go into overdrive. I love playing. And Id always wanted to do a record with him, because I just loved his musicalityI loved the fact that he played like a wicked guitar player, and was always curious what Id sound like playing with him. Same for the piano player, when his fingers get callused and strong. I stayed with them for about six months, just to help them out because there wasn't really any band around that I could join that could take over from Zappa. Youd think that a certain amount of success would squelch certain drives. When someones fingers get calluses on them, the guitar doesnt hurt so bad. Possibly. There was a statement I made on a VH1 special, which Im sure youve heardthat I never really felt part of the band. For the time being, Dunbar also produced a blues-rock music group known as the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, which highlighted guitarist/vocalist John Moorshead, bassist Alex Dmochowski, and organist Victor Brox. The guy could sing amazingly well. I got to the top of this hill, and I was in trouble. I just dont wanna be in the band anymore. I still never wanted Journey to go away, because it was something that I was there from the beginning and started. AD: No, I haven't. I spent 18 months with them, but they were going through a slow decline. Im serious. They all worked in the daytime and they'd come together at night to play jazz. RM: What exactly is traditional jazz in England? AD: I workout for about an hour before I play, going through a lot of rudiments and practicing coordination between my hands and feet. And every now and then hed look at me and go, What the fuck, yknow? What did you mean when you said, on that VH1 special, that youd never really felt like part of the band? We met in San Rafael, we sat on the edge of the marina, and I just told them, I cant do this anymore. It's easy to keep going at a high level of intensity for a four- minute solo, and just go through fast and end it. And I didnt want to stop either, by the way. I moved over there. If I had started two years earlier, I would have gone out and taken lessons, but by this time, I was too shy and I didn't feel confident. I like doing that sort of thing because I've got the technique to play it. "Freedom at Point Zero," I play a 16-bardfum opening, and it has to be the same, basically. So I went out with Flo and Eddie, working as the opening act for Alice Cooper. When Im ready Im ready. And I said, I understand that. Everybody understood that. doing all these great solos, but the band was always playing the same level of intensity behind him. If you crack itits got so much integrity. I came off stage feeling perfectly happy and wonderful, whereas I used to come off stage being on the very edge. Are you not allowed to talk about him on the record? My first solo thing, I think, was maybe six, seven years later. I only know that theyve been through three guys, and Ive never heard any of em, and theres no need to. I arrived in L.A. and his wife picked me up at the airport and took me to his house, where I lived for nine months. He didn't have any idea of which side of the beat he was on half of the time. Because Id never met the singer, Id never met their drummer. Then It Changed My Life. AD: Three days a week. Even while I was doing the solo album, even after it was successfulin my heart of hearts, I was never gonna leave Journey. Journey made three records for Columbia with that line up. I didn't know who the hell John Mayall was, so I asked my wife, and she said she thought he was a. country/western singer. And really did have a drinking problem, and didnt know it. So you can't rehash what you did before if somebody else is playing something new. What are you talking about? And they would show me on the X-rays, and the MRIs. It could be east of Vine. I like to do it when I'm not on the road. He gave me the back bedroom at his place. I didn't want to do that, so I decided to leave. Aynsley Dunbar was born on the 10th of January, 1946. With their 1978 breakthrough album, Infinity, some rock writers even today attempt to reduce the remarkable transformation by the San Francisco band Journey as "talented, veteran, but commercially struggling group hires world-class singer, which anybody would recognize; shortens song arrangements; and instantly becomes the biggest band in America". l went down there and found it to be great. The solo is arranged so it's really in-your-face guitar. All the other guys were about 40 and were married. I had to cool out a little bit.
